Continual technological development as well as new safety and legal requirements round the world represent ever greater demands on the seafarer. To meet these demands successfully, seafarers need training and retraining.

The video concentrates on a serving officer who is responsible for carrying out the company?s training policy on board ship. Organizing and carrying out training programmes is a skilful job; it requires an ability to assess on board training resources, identify who needs training and by whom this can best be provided. As ships are busy working environments crew availability must be ascertained and co-ordinated. Schedules must be prepared for making the best use of both human and technological resources. Beside organisational abilities, when choosing a training officer it is important to look for someone who can motivate people as well as communicate with them. Quite a tall order! Few people possess all these qualities at once, so this video is designed to help.

There are some simple techniques which will help the training officer to acquire the necessary skills quickly.

This video is supported by the book containing useful techniques and tips as well as providing forms to help with the appraisal, organisation and scheduling of tasks.
