This video package is concerned with operations on board merchant ships operating in very rough and very cold weather conditions. It deals with the preparations needed by different departments and different types of ship. There are nine distinct sections. The intention is that everyone should watch the first three sections and then select further relevant sections. The sections are:

• Preparing for the Cold
• Mooring Below Zero
• The Deck Department in the Cold
• The Engineering Department in the Cold
• The Catering Department in the Cold
• Discharging Tankers Below Zero
• The Senior Management Role in the Cold

This video does not deal with the issues of sailing through heavy ice where strengthened hulls are required, nor does it deal with navigating in the Arctic and Antarctic and the survival problems that these regions present. Although everyone at sea is familiar with heavy weather and indeed dreads it, it still causes injury, damage to ship and cargo, delays and additional bunker costs. The video looks at what can be done to reduce the effect of heavy weather on the ship's operations. The first thing is communication; everyone must be told whenever bad weather is expected, especially the Master, Chief Engineer and the Chief Cook. Operating a ship in temperatures well below freezing point is very demanding. Sub zero temperatures affect everyone, bringing new risks, slowing down work and restricting the time people can stay outside. This needs to be allowed for in planning. Preparation for a passage in the extreme cold must begin early, preferably before arrival at the port before the passage begins. It requires preplanning by the ship's head office as well as those on board.
