VIDEO BOOK

Serious emergencies on container vessels are rare. But when they do happen the result is often loss or damage to cargo and, in some cases, loss of life or serious damage to the environment. Yet in many instances, the emergency situations that lead to these disasters could be avoided by implementing an effective emergency response.Under SOLAS, all ships must carry a contingency or emergency plan. But the plans are not always comprehensive. They may lack detail or be out of date. And even when a plan is sufficiently detailed, in many cases the roles and responsibilities within it are not made clear. Seafarers whose prompt and decisive action could make a key difference, may lack training or clarity of purpose, and instead of being part of an organised process to deal with the emergency, may instead end up becoming one of its victims.Although this new programme applies to every type of ship, Emergency Response on Container Ships focuses on vessels where the particular problems of confined spaces and dangerous goods provide a challenge to the effectiveness of any emergency plan. The programme features a classroom based training session interwoven with video footage of real emergency situations. It works through each stage of an effective emergency response and highlights the importance of leadership, teamwork and the need for a positive safety culture; both on board and ashore.Main Topics
