Module 2.4: Bottom and Tailshaft Surveys
As a result of successfully completing this Module you will:

  1. Be aware of the periodicity and general requirements for Bottom and Tailshaft surveys.
  2. Be familiar with the main areas of the hull plating that give rise for concern.
  3. Be familiar with the requirements concerning anchors and chains and the possible options for repair or replacement.
  4. Be aware of the conditions that may permit an in-water survey of the bottom.
  5. Be familiar with the different types of propeller shafts and propellers in use and the requirements for their complete or modified survey.
  6. Be aware of the importance of the bearings and sealing glands in ensuring satisfactory tailshaft performance.
