BASIC MARINE LUBRICATION PART 1 - PRINCIPLES OF LUBRICATION & GENERAL APPLICATION

This module establishes the close link between the profitable operation of a ship and the proper operation of the main engine.

Problems inside machinery are described in terms of friction, corrosion and wear and the function of the lubricant in the context of each is explained. The basic definitions and descriptions of friction and lubrication are dealt with, followed by the principles of hydrodynamic and boundary lubrication. The oil wedge is described and the various wear mechanisms are dealt with.

The role of the various additives in combating these problems is explained. The video looks at base oils, mineral vegetable and synthetic oils and how the characteristics of these may change with the additives used in marine lubricants. Viscosity, Viscosity Index, TBN number and all the various industry standard classifications are explained, together with the effect of the anti-oxidant, anti-wear, EP, detergent and dispersant additives. The "Cardinal Rule" emerges which dictates that only the correct lubricant must be used for each specific lubrication job in each machine.
