BASIC MARINE LUBRICATION PART 2 - LUBRICATION, SLOW & MEDIUM SPEED MARINE DIESEL ENGINES

This module takes a detailed look at the lubrication problems associated with slow speed, cross-head engines and medium speed, trunk piston engines. It is designed to show and support good operation practices on board, concentrating on the choice of lubricants and the maintenance of the correct feed rate for cylinder lubrication. Cleaning and testing the lubricants also forms part of the story.

For the slow speed engine, three lubrication areas are shown: circulating system lubrication, cylinder lubrication and the ancillary aspects, such as turbo chargers and hydraulic systems. The function of system oils is explained, then the way the cylinder oil combats the detrimental effects of combustion products. The importance of the correct alkalinity of the cylinder oils is emphasised in relation to the quality of fuel used in the main engine. Feedrate adjustments are discussed together with the role of centrifuges and filters.

For medium speed engines the design differences from the slow speed cross-head engine are described and their implications on the lubricants used explained.
