Contamination is often found in the hydraulic systems on which much of the expensive, vital machinery aboard ship depends for its power and control.

This video is about the dirt and water which can contaminate hydraulic fluid, enough to bring things to a grinding halt. First we see what we mean by dirt, the obvious swarf, paint chippings, corrosion scale, etc. However there is more to it if you look under a microscope. This is the only way to see contamination which is too small for the naked eye to discover. It is not too small however to fail a hydraulic system. Contamination need not only be solid particles, water too brings its own problems.

The video shows what can happen if care to avoid contamination is not taken - both to machinery and vessel. Good principles when opening up and re-assembling hydraulic equipment are shown. The way to flush a system is described. Taking of samples at regular intervals and checking is demonstrated.
