VIDEOTEL UPDATES TANK PRESSURISATION TRAINING PROGRAMME
27 November 2008
Videotel has updated its Over and Under Pressurisation of Tanks title with new graphic animation sequences to illustrate the complexities of tank pressure management.
Following the introduction of version 2 of the Oil Companies International Maritime Forum (OCIMF) Tanker Management and Self Assessment (TMSA) initiative in July this year, Videotel, has been expanding and updating its range of training titles.
Over and Under Pressurisation of Tanks Edition 2 describes the causes of over and under pressurisation, raises awareness of how a ship’s venting systems work, and shows how to manage them safely during loading, discharging and transit.
Captain Milind Karkhanis, Vice President, Videotel Training Services, comments, “Cargo tanks of crude oil carriers, product and chemical tankers are subject to enormous forces from both pressure and vacuum. Serious damage can be caused from seemingly small over and under pressurisation events. Using a mixture of live action footage and computer graphic animation, this programme provides an introduction to tank pressure management, explaining the fundamental principles and the potential consequences of getting it wrong.”
The TMSA initiative provides ship operators with a means to improve and measure their own management systems. It encourages ship operators to assess their safety management systems against listed performance indicators. The results can be used to develop an improvement plan to achieve safety and environmental excellence.
Adoption of TMSA 2 is required by oil majors for tankers carrying their cargos. TMSA 2 includes best practice in loading and discharging operations at terminals and is therefore essential for tanker operators.
Videotel’s TMSA 2 programme, launched this summer, is for use by vessel operators’ management on shore and is also of value to the senior management team on board and oil companies’ vetting departments. It provides a tool to help improve tanker management systems and provides information about how TMSA 2 fits into the vetting process.
A third programme, Tank Cleaning Practice, launched this autumn, joins Tanker Management and Self Assessment 2 (TMSA 2) and Over and Under Pressurisation of Tanks, which together with Videotel’s extensive catalogue of teaching materials, provides a comprehensive suite of tanker training programmes.
Tank Cleaning Practice describes different types of tank cleaning, from a quick wash between compatible products, to the complex washing procedures required between incompatible products. It also looks at how decisions are made about which type of cleaning process to use.
In making these programmes, Videotel has been working with INTERTANKO and other leading training establishments and operators to guarantee that these products support the INTERTANKO TOTS (Tanker Officer Training Standards) scheme. TOTS provides the tanker industry with a standard that ensures tanker officer competence through training, both on board and on shore.
Videotel’s tanker training programmes are available on video and DVD with a support workbook and are suitable for use in training sessions on board ship. CBT (computer based training) interactive versions are also excellent for independent study, wherever the trainee may be.
