VIDEOTEL PROGRAMMES MEET MANY TANKER TRAINING NEEDS
30 October 2008
This Autumn sees another valuable training title for Tankers added to the catalogue.
With the introduction of version 2 of the Oil Companies International Maritime Forum (OCIMF) Tanker Management and Self Assessment (TMSA) initiative in July this year, Videotel, a leading supplier of training software, has added to its range of training titles with Tank Cleaning Practice, a new programme launched this autumn. Tank Cleaning Practice joins TMSA 2 in the ever-growing Videotel training catalogue.
Captain Milind Karkhanis, Vice President, Videotel Training Services, said: “Tank cleaning is one of the most important aspects of cargo transportation. Our programme outlines the key processes and procedures that are prerequisites for safe and effective tank cleaning, emphasising the importance of crew familiarisation and training.”
The programme describes different types of tank cleaning, from a quick wash between compatible products, to the complex washing procedures required between incompatible products. It also looks at how decisions are made about which type of cleaning process to use.
TMSA 2 is for use by vessel operators’ management ashore and is also of value to the senior management team on board and oil companies’ vetting departments. It provides a tool to help improve tanker management systems and provides information about how TMSA 2 fits into the vetting process.
The TMSA initiative provides ship operators with a means to improve and measure their own management systems. It encourages ship operators to assess their safety management systems against listed performance indicators. The results can be used to develop an improvement plan to achieve safety and environmental excellence.
Adoption of TMSA 2 is required by oil majors for tankers carrying their cargos. TMSA 2 includes best practice in loading and discharging operations at terminals and is therefore essential for tanker operators.
In making these programmes, Videotel has been working with INTERTANKO and other leading training establishments and operators to guarantee that these products support the INTERTANKO TOTS (Tanker Officer Training Standards) scheme. TOTS provides the tanker industry with a standard that ensures tanker officer competence through training, both on board and on shore.
Videotel’s tanker training programmes are available on video and DVD with support workbooks. CBT (computer based training) interactive versions are also excellent for independent study, wherever the trainee may be.
