SAVING OR WASTING ENERGY?
10 June 2008
The price of oil is steadily rising making running a ship more and more expensive. Tougher standards in relation to MARPOL also means it is time to think: Is your ship saving or wasting energy?
There is no doubt the ship still needs oil to run, but there are ways to reduce the amount it uses, saving money and reducing carbon emissions.
Videotel’s Onboard Energy Saving and the Environment training package demonstrates how a company can have a clear energy saving plan. It starts at the office with voyage planning and should be assessed at every stage, right down to an individual’s actions on board.
Seafarers can take practical measures to avoid unnecessary waste and reduce energy consumption. Careful engine maintenance, using the minimum ballast required to meet safety requirements, switching off lights, exhaust fans and other equipment when not in use are just some of the ways a ship can save energy.
